Hemispheres: Reducing Violence Against Women in Nigeria
Nwankwo has long been visibly proactive and energetic in her efforts to engage in legislative advocacy towards the enforcement of women’s human rights. One of her most successful initiatives is an annual Women’s Human Rights Tribunal held in Nigeria in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25th.

South Africa’s announced withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a slap in the face for victims of the most serious crimes and should be reconsidered, African groups and international organizations with a presence in Africa said today. The groups urged other African countries to affirm their commitment to the ICC, the only court of last resort to which victims seeking justice for mass atrocities can turn.

CIRDDOC Executive Director Re-elected for another 4 year term on the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
On the 21st of June 2016, elections were held at the UN Headquarters in new York, USA to fill in eleven vacant seats on the United Nations CEDAW Committee. The Executive Director of CIRDDOC, Mrs Oby Nwankwo was re-elected as a member of the Committee for another term of four years. Her first term would be expiring in December 2016. Having been re-elected, she will serve from 2017 to 2020. CIRDDOC is grateful to the Federal Government of Nigeria for finding her worthy of nomination to contest for the elections. She has pledged to represent the country to the best of her ability during the next four years on the committee.
Nigeria officially presents its candidate Oby Nwankwo to the International Community
On the 14th of June 2016, the Head of Mission, Nigeria Permanent Mission in NY, Mr. Bosah presented Oby Nwankwo to the international community as its candidate for re-election into the CEDAW Committee. This took place at a reception held at the Permanent Mission for the States Parties to the CEDAW Convention. He described the candidate as a strong one who has a solid advocacy background and who has done great work on women’s rights in Nigeria. He commended the candidate for her commitment and doggedness, most especially for the work she has so far done in the four years of her membership in the Committee.
Nigeria Renominates Oby Nwankwo for a Second Term
It is my singular honour and privilege to present to you Ms. Theodora Oby Nwankwo, Nigeria’s candidate for re-election into the Committee on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Her first term in the CEDAW Committee ends in December 2016. Ms Nwankwo is of high moral character and integrity and possesses the qualities required for an expert and member of the CEDAW Committee. Beyond that, Mrs. Nwankwo through her first term discharged and proved her mettle. She seeks an opportunity to apply the experience acquired during these 4 years as an active member of CEDAW Committee and to deepen the good job she has started in the committee.
